Quit Smoking - Your New Years Resolution

January 3rd, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | 0

Welcome back!

It is estimated that there are some 70 million smokers in the United States, despite the fact that more than 400,000 Americans (which is over 18 percent of all deaths nationwide) die each year because of cigarette smoking. Doctors say that secondhand smoke kills about 50,000 of them.

With the ever increasing cost of cigarettes (as much as $6 per pack in some areas) as well as the proven toxicity of the carcinogens in them, it’s no wonder that the most popular new years resolution every year is to kick the nicotine habit.

But why is it so hard to quit smoking? Why do so many people try each year and yet so many of them fail? There are two addictions associated with smoking cigarettes and both of these addictions must be addressed and conquered. One is obvious which is the physical addiction to nicotine. The other is the addiction to the smoking habit itself. This is the mechanical addiction related to the process of lighting up and puffing away. To some, the simple act of smoking is as much a habit as the physical addiction to the nicotine. To be a successful ex-smoker, you must kick both of these habits. Address only one, and your chances of quitting cigarettes are greatly reduced.

You don’t have to go through the process alone. There is help out there. From nicotine replacement aides such as the various patches, nicotine gum, and other nicotine delivery systems to the numerous drugs that can be prescribed by your family doctor, one should never try to quit smoking cold turkey.

One of the newest inventions is the development of the Electronic Cigarette. This remarkable device delivers the nicotine to the smoker without the tar, carbon monoxide, or other toxins found in tobacco while still satisfying the mechanical addiction to the smoking habit. E cigarettes look like the real thing, and the smoke they produce looks and tastes like the real thing as well. The nicotine is delivered to the user all the while satisfying the mechanical addiction to smoking as well.

Although electronic cigarettes have not been approved by the FDA as quit smoking aides, they are reputed to be much safer than cancer causing tobacco. Most people don’t know that there are more than 50 cancer causing agents in tobacco, and that nicotine is not one of them.

If your new years resolution is to kick the smoking habit this year, be sure to take advantage of one or more of the many stop smoking aids available to you so that you may join the more than 200 million Americans that are tobacco free. Your life depends upon it.

Are You Doing Self Care Body Maintenance?

January 3rd, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | 0

It is ironic isn’t it that we take our health and wellness for granted until we get sick. We had no time for exercise or self care but suddenly we can be sick, injured and out of commission for weeks and even months. Suddenly we have had to make time for illness when we are forced to.

But what if the illness or injury was serious - like really serious? Would we have even made the connection between our illness or injury and our lack of self maintenance as the years passed us by? We rush off to the doctor and expect to be fixed up and on our way again. Like it is not our problem at all.

But why would anyone wait to be forced to take time out because of sickness or injury? Wouldn’t it be a better plan to treat the doctor as the breakdown service and take responsibility for the maintenance ourselves and avoid it happening at all?

After all when we think about the future we want for ourselves and all we hope to do in all areas of our life. Is good health not essential for all of these hopes and dreams? If we lose our good health, how can we expect to take care of business, family and other interests and goals?

Our future has to mean more than taking this risk. If fifty percent of the world’s population has at least one chronic ‘lifestyle’ disease and many have multiple conditions is this not a bit like playing Russian roulette with our health?

We have all of these excuses why we cannot make time two or three times each week for a proper exercise program that contains mostly strength training exercise. “I’m too busy right now”, or “After the holidays”, or here’s a good one “When the kids are at school”. When will health become a priority - weeks, months years away, when the kids leave home or when you retire?

But what if it is too late, and some dreaded illness that has been smouldering away for the last twenty years is about to show itself? Little use running off to the doctor then. Nasty ‘lifestyle’ diseases like heart disease, cancer and diabetes are not curable by any doctor or any drug. When the human body has arrived at this broken down state at best the symptoms can be managed but leave the victim with half a life.

Don’t wait till this happens, get yourself down to your local gym and get started on your strength training program. It will give your muscular system the work it needs to stay healthy. Our bodies were made to be active - very active and this movement is necessary to stimulate ‘growth and repair’ hormones that stop the body from decaying and deteriorating well before it needs too.

You will have so much more to look forward too as with the extra energy and vitality that ‘being strong and fit’ provides, you will be a more productive person, not just at work, but in all areas of your life. When you feel and look great, you will also be a happier and more vibrant person, you will be more fun to be with, and you will have more to give to those you care about.

Are You In A Metabolic Shambles?

January 3rd, 2010 -- Posted in Uncategorized | 0

Have you ever started a weight loss diet program and maybe lost some weight but as soon as you started eating normally again the weight came back on with maybe some extra?

This mystery can be explained by the condition of your metabolism - your body’s engine and fat burning machinery.

When we see slim people who can eat virtually anything without gaining weight we believe that person has been gifted with a fast metabolism and can indulge in any food they want without the consequences of weight gain. And the opposite is true as well as if you have a slow or sluggish metabolism - it can blunt even the most valiant efforts at weight loss.

If you are the owner of a slow metabolism it could have been caused by many factors such as low calorie diets, poor food quality, processed foods, lack of protein or essential fats, too many carbohydrates, dehydration, stress, toxins or chemicals in food.

Many people in an effort to try and lose weight quickly tend to cut calories too much. This is one of the major reasons why many people dieting suffer from a slow metabolism as the body goes into starvation mode and hanging on to its fat stores and triying to conserve every last bit of energy for survival.

To get around this and rebuild your metabolic motor so it works for you rather than against you a proper nutrition plan should be followed. Small meals eaten every 2-3 hours throughout the day each containing around 20 grams of protein and the balance vegetables is at the top of the list.

Next a proper exercise program made up mostly of strength training exercise is next on the list. Muscle tissue is where fat is burned for energy so the condition of those muscle cells is very important so fat burning is boosted. You cannot repair and rebuild your metabolism doing long. Slow. endurance type of activity such as walking, jogging or cycling.

These activities are fine in your spare time but can never ever replace a proper exercise program that works the muscular system through their ranges of movement under a load.

The speed of your metabolism depends on the condition and state of that muscular system so a couple of sessions each week is enough if the program is done correctly.

To ensure this seek the help of a fitness professional to set up your program and teach you how to do the exercises with the correct level of intensity (degree of effort used) so you can get your metabolism back up to speed to burn off unwanted body fat.

This rebuilding process will take some time and you will need to be patient. You did not damage your metabolism overnight so it is not going to repair itself overnight.

You have to accept that when you do begin a balanced eating plan, your weight may not drop as you expected but you have to repair your metabolism before your body can begin melting body fat. But once you have rebuilt it with proper nutrition and a proper exercise program just you watch that strong, lean, slim, healthy body emerge.

My name is Carolyn Hansen, and my goal is to show you how to automate your weight loss by mastering your metabolism in as little as 30 days. I have been doing it for years, and you can do it too. Come find out how.
