A Better Bath Brush
The house was filthy from basement to attic. There seemed to be no hope for even the smallest amount of space. The social worker, who was paid to be caring and nonjudgmental, even said that it was a travesty what had happened to this place and what it needed was a match not a cleaning crew. But the small boy who lived there with his mother said that he wanted to keep the place because it reminded him of his daddy, and so the crew decided that it was worth saving for sentimental reasons. A housecleaning catalog was consulted to see what could be purchased for the recovery of the home. One of the items was a forlorn looking little bath brush that sat amongst the more important cleaners all by itself, untouched.
The boy took pity on the bath brush because he felt kind of lonely and unused himself. He asked the housecleaning salesman what it was used for and instead of dismissing the little boy as a nuisance, like most people would have, the man took him aside and told him about the magical qualities it contained.
The man said that that little bath brush had once been the scepter of a king and after it had left his hands it had become a magic wand that a famous wizard (no not that one) had used to combat evil in his day. The housecleaning products man continued to weave his stories for an enrapt little boy while all the noise of cleaning rumbled around them and the boy’s mother quietly walked up and listened.
Now it became an enchanted sword that could cure the world of all the wrongs that were imposed upon a little kingdom, pressed on all sides by larger ones. The bath brush took part in a few wars with the express purpose of gallantry and a call above and beyond what most other little brushes were meant for. The man finished the tales, saying he had to go and gave his card to the lady in case she ever needed him again.
The housecleaning products man visited more and more frequently and always took time to play make believe with his little friend. About a year later they all had to get dressed up and go down to the church. Because, you see, that magical little bath brush had not only given the little boy back his home, but it provided him with a new daddy also.

Sitting beside the porch one fine afternoon, Travis decided that he had had enough! The constant pushing and pulling more than sufficed to drive the most patient creature insane. Having little girls constantly wanting to drive you around in doll carts and try to put pink bows in your hair was embarrassing. She also followed him around with a discarded personal care catalog because she had to clean up the “wee” messes that he made. No self respecting dog could go through another hair brush fiasco; with the little imp trying to pull every hair out of a sensitive head. A Rottweiler would have bitten her!
But Travis was the epitome of decorum where the little monster was concerned. He considered it his duty to protect her, and the neighborhood dogs always laughed to see a miniature poodle acting like he would take on the world for her. Well I would! She may be a pain and not want him to bite the leg of the passing personal care salesman, but she was his girl and that meant that he had to protect her.
One afternoon she had come at him with a hair brush again and wanted to play dress up. He was not in the mood and so he had gone under the stairs to watch for the chance to escape. She had just gone around the edge of the house when who should come up the walk but that arrogant personal care salesman. He was carrying a case of more of those offending articles and trying to get the mistress to buy one. He just could not help himself. He latched onto a skinny, hairless leg and was quickly shaken off. The little girl came back around the corner and gave Travis a couple of swats with the hair brush.
Luckily the personal care salesman was understanding. He said that Travis did what any home protector would have done. He would be more careful in the future how he approached strange doors. Then he gave the little girl a new hair brush just for Travis. He whistled his way down the walk and gave a jaunty wave as he turned up the side walk.
Travis remembered that man from then on. He looked on him as a friend because there was always a treat when he came, but he also always brought those hair brushes!
