Welcome back!
We all have probably heard this absurd objection to a living a healthy lifestyle, “I don’t want to live a long life anyway”. To many people the thought of living a long life is frightening when so many others are seen to be suffering and miserable having to live for years or even decades with chronic incurable disease.
Despite spending trillions of dollars each year on drugs, doctor visits, hospitalizations, and other dangerous procedures, the health of people around the world continues to deteriorate year after year. More people are suffering with heart disease, cancer, diabetes, asthma, depression, arthritis and other serious conditions than ever before in history. There are an estimated 1000 million overweight and obese people on the planet including our children who are fatter and sicker than ever before.
Any wonder many people would not want a long life when there is a 95% chance of ending up with a chronic disease and having to suffer your life being at the mercy of doctors and other people just to exist. But it does not have to be this way and we can live our lives without the fear of ending up like this.
Many of us do not realize that we have great influence over the quality of our life and we can actually choose to improve its quality by taking proactive steps to stay free from chronic disease. One of the big things we can do to stay healthy is with a program of proper exercise. We used to think that not exercising was unhealthy and we didn’t think that a lack of vigorous activity can greatly increase the chances of developing a chronic disease. That assumption has been proved to be wrong.
Not enough muscle building and maintaining exercise is one of the big risk factors for the formation of chronic disease. Imagine how bad it would feel to be confronted with the fact that the way you live your life is the cause of becoming an invalid?
When the doctor says go and get strong and fit, they are not just telling patients to do that to improve their health; they are actually telling them how to avoid a disease that is stalking them waiting to pounce. When extra fats and sugars from our highly processed, poor quality foods don’t clear the bloodstream by being burnt up for fuel for physical activity they end up in places where they shouldn’t be. This can cause problems for the body’s metabolic functions setting the stage for disease.
How easy to avoid all of this and simply become an active person so your body stays on an even metabolic keel. Your exercise program should contain mostly strength training exercise as muscle tissue is where excess sugar (glucose) is burnt so it is important that you engage your muscles with the right activities.
The good news is that just changing this one thing can be enough to make the difference between a comfortable older age and a miserable one. Imagine how good it will be not to have to worry about sickness and just focus on keeping our good health so we can prolong the enjoyment of our life by living longer free of chronic disease.

You know you have to make time in your life for proper exercise. You understand how important it is for your health and you do make promises to yourself that you will get it done a couple of times each week. But what happens? Nothing, because you always manage to find a reason (excuse) why you can’t do it.
Work, home, family, friends; in your world, they have to come right? It is time to be honest. Where does your health and fitness sit on your priority list? Is it even on the list?
Many people have been told that exercise should be ‘fun’ and they should ‘enjoy’ it. But the truth is proper exercise isn’t always ‘fun’. Its actually ‘work’. Whether we like it or not it is the work or movement that your body needs to stay healthy.
Here are some of the reasons (excuses) why people keep putting off proper exercise see if you can recognize any of them.
? You are waiting for things to calm down in your life. Have you not figured it
out yet? Life doesn’t calm down there will always be work, kids, family, social obligations, they are never going to go away. If you are waiting for a clear schedule, you will be waiting for a long time. You really need to exercise and you must find a way to do it now.
? You don’t have the motivation. Motivation is not something that just comes to
you. It has to be worked on every single day. What got you going today may not work tomorrow. Motivation is not something you suddenly ‘get’. It comes from within and something that the more you work on the better it becomes.
? You are waiting to fall in love with exercise. You believe that you will suddenly
wake up one morning, itching to get to that workout. It just doesn’t work that way. Find pleasure in your proper exercise program (strength training). Make little goals for yourself, challenge yourself and enjoy the feeling of your body doing what it must do to remain healthy.
? It seems like there are no immediate consequences to skipping a workout. It
is not like you will gain 10 pounds or suddenly get heart disease if you miss one day you think. But, it is easy to let the time get away from you until, pretty soon it has been a month since your last workout. Then the consequences, weight gain, low energy, loss of muscle tone become apparent.
? You do not have huge chunks of time to do all this exercise. Well then you are
in luck, you do not need lots of time.
If you are doing a proper exercise program of strength training you can achieve a lot in a very short time. Only long, slow ineffective activities like walking, jogging or cycling take a lot of time and don’t give any muscle toning benefits which is what you need if your goal is to build yourself a strong, lean healthy body.
Taking time out of your day to care for yourself is important. Having a strong and fit body and mind can make you feel good about yourself and your life. This can contribute to long-term feelings of wellbeing along with long term health and wellness.

Often when someone decides that they need to lose weight they embark on a ‘do it yourself’ weight loss plan. Often these self designed regimes do not lead to the weight loss or fitness results hoped for.
Here are 6 mistakes that are made and some tips on how to avoid them:
1. Eating a low calorie diet ? Many people mistakenly think they need to starve to lose weight but this can cause problems. If not enough fuel is supplied to the body then there is not enough fuel for the body to function leaving you low on energy.
The metabolism slows down (the body’s engine) and stored fat is held until the last possible moment. Precious calorie burning muscle tissue is broken down for energy making future fat loss very difficult.
Adopt a diet plan that you can live with for the rest of your life. If you cannot, you will not be able to keep the weight off once you being eating normally again. Try 5-7 small each day with at least 20 grams of protein and the balance made up of raw and cooked vegetables. If you eat one of these small meals every 2-3 hours throughout the day you will find you will lose body fat, have lots of energy and are not hungry.
2. Doing too much cardio type activity - It is easy to think ? if I do more cardio I will burn more calories and lose more weight. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work that way. When you perform long duration activities things happen to your body. First, prolonged cardio activity increases cortisol release (a stress hormone) which will cause your body to hang on to body fat rather than release it to be burnt as fuel. Its presence also means you will be breaking down muscle tissue to be used for fuel which is exactly the opposite of what you really want to happen if you wish to lose body fat.
Swap one or two of your cardio sessions with interval training. These are short burst of high intensity activity alternated with lower intensity movement. An example is 15 seconds of all out sprinting then one minute of walking repeated 8-12 times.
3. Skipping strength training exercise ? The only exercise that can tone and build muscle tissue which is the key to having a healthy metabolism (the body’s engine) is strength training. If you are serious about losing weight you simply must do this type of training. The modern way is to increase the metabolic rate and burn off body fat rather than the old fashioned and ineffective way of starving it off. Strength training will do this for you in the fastest way possible.
4. Not keeping a food and exercise journal ? Research shows that if you record everything you eat and when you exercise you will lose more weight and will be more likely to stick to your plan. It is also a great idea to have someone (friend/family member) review your journal as the idea that someone will be checking it will help you stay accountable. You need to be writing down what you are eating so you can be sure of how much you are eating.
And the last thing, do not give up on your plan too soon. Unfortunately, losing weight takes time. You may lose only one half to one pound a week but think of how long it took you to put on the weight. It will actually take you even longer to get it all off. Give your exercise and eating plan a chance by sticking with it at least 3 months or longer.
If it is still not happening seek the help of a fitness professional who will be able to get you back on track and keep things moving. Just keep on trying till you get it right ? it will be well worth it.
